Massive 16.3 Pound Bass

That’s right, yesterday a behemoth largemouth bass was caught out of Clear Lake that weighed 16.3 pounds! She was the largest bass I’ve heard of in the last few years but I know there are fish that are a lot bigger than her still swimming in Clear Lake and Lake Berryessa. The lake has almost reached the full mark and its still rising slowly so it should be full within the next couple days. Lake Berryessa has also come up some in the last couple days and is looking much better. It is actually about 5 feet down from the highest point last year and still rising so it should at least reach the mark. However it is still 32 feet from full so lots more rain is needed! As far as the fishing goes, I haven’t been on Lake Berryessa since this last rain started but it was good just before the storms rolled in. I was catching fish on top water lures in the main lake, jigs in the narrows and a few bed fish in the creeks. Clear Lake on the other hand is still fishing quite well even with this nasty weather. The water has gotten muddy in all the creeks so finding cleaner water is the key. I’ll be back out tomorrow looking to beat that 16 pounder and getting ready for a couple guide trips later this week. The best baits will be swim baits and glide baits but also jigs in the old tules will be key for the next few weeks. I still have a few days open this week so if you would like a chance at the years biggest bass call me and let’s book your day!

Clear Lake…Up and Down

Wow! Talking about some confused fish! The weather here has been anything but normal for this time of the year. Last week we had temps in the 80s and the fish were moving up to spawn, this week we have temps in the 60s and the water temp has dropped 6 to 8 degrees. Where did the fish go? Also the moon phase has been less than ideal so the fishing hasn’t been that great. All that being said I had a trip yesterday with a great couple and they managed to catch some really nice bass up to 6 pounds plus a 16 pound catfish.
This week we also started out Wednesday Nite Shoot Outs (WNS) and I caught a 6.9 pounder that got me second place. Torey won with a 7.92 pounder. The average bass was almost 6 pounds. Not bad for a confusing week! The forcast for the next couple weeks looks pretty stable so the bass will be back in the shallows in a couple days so if you up for some of the years best bassin call me!

Stable Warm Weather and Rising Water Temperature

Well the days are getting longer and the extra sunshine along with the warm days are helping the water temp to rise slowly. The bass are already in their staging areas and eating pretty good. Last week I caught a 10.2, a 9.13, and a 9.1 pound bass all on jigs. Also caught several 5 to 8 pounders. I also had two guide trips that yielded fish up to 8 pounds plus a few catfish up to 20 pounds. The top lures have been jigs, senkos, and rip baits. Of course the minnow bite is crazy good. I still have a few days open for the spring fishing so if you are interested in some of this awesome fishing it’s time to give me a call!

Anglers Choice Tounament on Lake Berryessa

Saturday at Lake Berryessa my partner and I had a really good day. Everybody was catching fish but we found something that no one else figured out. The key was a little different locatation and a different lure also. I can’t say what the lure was because my partner would kill me for letting that out right now. However I’ll be glad to show you if you want to take a trip to Berryessa soon. Just call me and let’s plan it.
On Sunday the wind blew extremely hard so we were concerned that we couldn’t get to our fish and that the area old be blown out. We decided to take a chance and it paid off, we won the tournament with 18.5 pounds which was 10 pounds off our mark on Saturday with perfect conditions. Both Berryessa and Clear Lake are kicking our some great bass right now so it’s time to get up northern Cali and get in on some of the years best bassin!

The Bite is on at Clear Lake

The past week has been really good on Clear Lake. Saturday my partner and I had 35+ pounds for our five best bass with a total of somewhere around 30 fish caught. Most of those fish were caught on a rip bait. Sunday in the tournament we only had 25 pounds and need 35 to win. That day our rip bite didn’t work so we had to change plans and go to other baits. Our best fish was 8.15 pounds and was caught on a swim bait. I had two guide trips this week and both resulted in great catches of up to 30 fish each day. The best fish of the two trips was caught by Franz and weighed 8 pounds. Most of those bass were caught on shallow crank baits, rip baits and live minnows. I fished alone on Wednesday and it was super foggy in the morning and the bite was slow, but after noon the fog cleared and the fishing was awesome. I caught several fish up to 6 pounds with Luckycraft LV 500, Stacyee, and ended the day with a 9.85 pond largemouth. Obviously the bite is getting better so if you are ready for some early spring action on Clear Lake or Lake Berryessa give me a call.

February, Rain, and Big Bass

Clear Lake water level is higher now than it ever got last year, and there is lots of rain on the way this week. The forecast is calling for 5 to 8 inches of rain which should add another couple feet of water to our unusually low lake. Februray and March are great months for big bass here and they are starting to show up. I have been out of the state for the last week so I haven’t been on the water but will be back tomorrow, rain or shine! Ihave have seen a couple photos of some big fish that were caught in the last few days and can’t wait to get out there and get some of them. The next couple weeks should be really good, especially aftrer the lake settles from the rains. If you are ready for some big bass action give me a call and let’s plan your trip before someone else gets your date!

Clear Lake is Turning On

Well it’s about time…Clear Lake is bringing to put out a few fish. I had two trips last week and both were successful. On Friday my clients manage to catch a dozen bass up to 6 pounds. The better fish were caught on the Lucky Craft LV500. They also caught fish on a BDS3 which is a square bill crank bait.
Well if you’re like me you are getting the itch so give me a call and let’s book your trip.

Big Baits and Bed Fishing

I had a couple of my oldest clients with me last week and they brought along a friend, Jim for his first trip on Clearlake. They all caught lots of fish. The best bass of the day fell to Brad and weighed in at 6.7 pounds. This was his personal best. Jim also caught his personal best that weighed just over 5 pounds. We caught fish on jigs, Senkos, big swimbaits, and the A-rig, however most of the fish fell for live minnows. Now it’s time to get ready for the Chamber tournament where I expect to find big bass eating big swimbaits. I will also be looking for fish on beds as the water is warming up so the fish should be moving up to the shore. So if you are interested in catching your personal best bass and throwing big swimbaits and bed fishing is your thing, give me a call and lets book your trip.

Two Ten Pound Bass in One Week

I guess it’s safe to say the fishing is great at Clear Lake now. I had three trips this week that were awesome. Saturday Angela caught a 10 pound largemouth bass and then Thursday Mark caught a 10 pound pig. Both fish were caught on minnows but Mark also caught fish on the A rig, jigs, Senkos, rip baits, and big swim baits. Beside these two giants, a lot more fish were caught up 7.5 pounds. Wednesday I had Ramon and Manny with me again, but the east wind blew extremely hard making it really tough to find a place calm enough to fish. They did manage to catch about ten bass up to 5 pounds, just no big ones. Well if you are ready for some of the best bass fishing on the planet give me a call and let’s book your guide trip ASAP!

Lake Berryessa

I got a chance to fish Lake Berryessa yesterday with a friend from Napa. It was good to get away from Clear Lake for a day. The fishing wasn’t great but the weather played a role, as it was really windy so we limited to where we could fish. The cold north wind and high pressure are never the best fishing conditions. We did manage to catch a few good fish though. We caught small mouth up to 4 pounds and large mouth to 6 pounds. Tomorrow I’ll be back on Clear Lake and looking for some big large mouth bass. It’s time for the big girls to start staging. So if you are ready for some early season bassin and you’re looking for a guide that can get you on them give me a call and let’s set up a trip.
