High North Wind Slow Clear Lake Bite

We have had supper high winds at Clear Lake this week and the bass here don’t like cold north wind! Even with the wind Clear Lake is still better than most. I had clients catch fish up to 9 pounds and I caught a 9.5 pounder. They are still eating rip and jerk baits, Lucky Craft LV500 and other lipless crank baits, Little Creepers Trash Fish and other swim baits including glide baits. Lake Berryessa is also kicking out some giant bass like the 14 pounder caught by a team in the American Bass Ass. tournament Saturday. Back at Clear Lake the water temp is climbing to 65 in the day so the bite will change from prespawn to spawning bass really soon. So if you like looking at bed fish get ready it almost here!

Clear Lake is the Best Lake in the Country

That’s right, Clear Lake is the number one lake in the world right now!!! I have personally caught 8 fish over 10 pounds in the last 3 weeks with the best three weighing in at 11.54(in the Wild West Bass Trail tourney), 12 pounds 2 ounce, and 13 pounds 13 ounce. Also had a client last week catch a 10.2 pounder and 4 more over 8 pounds. These are not fish caught on minnow but lures. The better bass are being caught on lures with the bigger numbers of bass coming on minnows. I have also seen pictures of many many other bass over ten pounds in the last couple weeks. The best baits right now are rip baits, Lucky Craft LV500, A-rig, and swim baits. With the weather that’s coming this week the fish will be hitting the shores and spawning soon so if you are looking to get in on some of this prespawn fishing you better call ASAP!!! If bed fishing is your thing, then call me and let’s get a date set before my calendar fills.

Massive 16.3 Pound Bass

That’s right, yesterday a behemoth largemouth bass was caught out of Clear Lake that weighed 16.3 pounds! She was the largest bass I’ve heard of in the last few years but I know there are fish that are a lot bigger than her still swimming in Clear Lake and Lake Berryessa. The lake has almost reached the full mark and its still rising slowly so it should be full within the next couple days. Lake Berryessa has also come up some in the last couple days and is looking much better. It is actually about 5 feet down from the highest point last year and still rising so it should at least reach the mark. However it is still 32 feet from full so lots more rain is needed! As far as the fishing goes, I haven’t been on Lake Berryessa since this last rain started but it was good just before the storms rolled in. I was catching fish on top water lures in the main lake, jigs in the narrows and a few bed fish in the creeks. Clear Lake on the other hand is still fishing quite well even with this nasty weather. The water has gotten muddy in all the creeks so finding cleaner water is the key. I’ll be back out tomorrow looking to beat that 16 pounder and getting ready for a couple guide trips later this week. The best baits will be swim baits and glide baits but also jigs in the old tules will be key for the next few weeks. I still have a few days open this week so if you would like a chance at the years biggest bass call me and let’s book your day!

Clear Lake is Filling Up

Clear Lake is currently at 6.35 which is about one foot from the full mark. The bad thing is they are starting to open the dam and let water out in order to prevent flooding. I think it is a little too soon as the lake has only come up about 5 feet all year and flood stage is at 9.5 feet. We are a long way from that mark at this point! Hopefully they won’t dump too much water. As far as the fishing goes, before the rains started the fishing had been really awesome but the water was getting supper clear which makes the fishing tough. The rains not only bring the lake level up but also stain the water so as soon as the rains slow down the fishing should be nothing short of great. Not only is the bass fishing good, so is the crappie fishing. The best way to catch these tasty fish is with small jigs or minnows. For the bass it’s time to start throwing swim baits over the grass flats. They can be caught with anything from Little Creepers Trash Fish to 12 inch Osprey swim baits and River2Sea S-Waver to 14 inch glide baits. While Clear Lake is nearly full and should be above the full mark by the time this rain is over, Lake Berryessa is still severely low. Only a few of the lake’s boat ramps are currently open dew to the low water level there. The fishing there is still good though with a few small mouth and large mouth moving up on their beds just before the rain started. Well if this weather is making you stir crazy, give me a call and let me guide you to some of the years best fishing!

Lake County is on Fire

This time it’s not Clear Lake it’s Lake County. The fires here have caused complete devastion. Thousands of people have been evcuated and many, many have lost their homes. I personally have been evcuated from my home since Saturday and have no idea when I’ll be able to return. And to top it off the fishing is really good right now. I was looking forward to the upcoming FLW tournament and the Triton owners tourney which have or probably will be canceled or rescheduled. The bass are really eating good right now. You can catch fish on jigs, crank baits, swim baits, and drop shots. I should be able to get in and get my boat in the next few days then I’ll be able get back on the water. If you want to join me in one of these exciting fish catching outings now is the time to call!

The Water’s Rising and the Bite is Improving

It’s about time…this week the fishing was actually good! I caught bass cranking from 5 to 12 feet. The best bass of the week for me was about 7 pounds, plus several fish in the 3 to 5 pound range. We caught fish on deep crank bait, shallow cranks, and lipless cranks. I heard of a few fish caught on big swim baits also, but I haven’t tryed them yet but it is time. Now with the rain that is on its way the Clear Lake should jump up a couple feet and that will make the bite get even better!

Post Spawn Is On

There was an Anglers Choice tournament on Clear Lake Saturday and it took over 27 pounds of bass to get a check. Not bad for fish that are still skinny as rail from the spawn. There are still some bass on beds but the guys that won the tournament aren’t bed fishermen and the good bed fishermen didn’t do that well. I was at Lake Berryessa this weekend fishing an Anglers Choice tourney and finished in fourth place with just over 21 pounds while first place had just over 23 pounds. Our fish were all post spawn also and were eating big swim baits. We caught a limit of fish on spooks, flukes, and senkos early. However the big fish just would eat those baits for us so we so we changed and started throwing big swim baits and culled out every fish we had in the livewell. There was one key bait that we caught all the fish that we caught on and if you want to know what that bait is call me and lets set up a trip and I’ll show you some great fishing on Lake Berryessa. Of course Clear Lake is my home lake and I’d be glad to put you on some big fish here!

Rising water

Last week the bass moved up and were starting to make their beds but the weather this week has pushed them back out. This week we caught fish in the staging area again which is much easier  for most clients than bed fishing.  The baits that were most successful were Lucky Craft LV500s, trash fish swim baits, the A-Rig, rip baits, big swim baits, and of course live minnows.  The best news is that the lake has come up about 6 inches already and should rise a little more.  Once the weather stabilizes and it starts to warm up again the bass will be back on the shore and bed fishing will be the way to catch the big girls again.  So if you are looking to hit the shores of Clearlake in search of that giant bass call me and let’s get it done!

Two Ten Pound Bass in One Week

I guess it’s safe to say the fishing is great at Clear Lake now. I had three trips this week that were awesome. Saturday Angela caught a 10 pound largemouth bass and then Thursday Mark caught a 10 pound pig. Both fish were caught on minnows but Mark also caught fish on the A rig, jigs, Senkos, rip baits, and big swim baits. Beside these two giants, a lot more fish were caught up 7.5 pounds. Wednesday I had Ramon and Manny with me again, but the east wind blew extremely hard making it really tough to find a place calm enough to fish. They did manage to catch about ten bass up to 5 pounds, just no big ones. Well if you are ready for some of the best bass fishing on the planet give me a call and let’s book your guide trip ASAP!

Clear Lake Chamber Bass Tournament

Congrats to Mike Krnaich (BMX) and Brian Bailey on their win with 60.76 pounds of bass for 2 days. It was another slug feast with the top 11 teams all having over 50 pounds each for the 2 days. As you can see the fishing here is still great. Big swim baits and crank baits and lipless crank baits (Lucky Craft LV 500) seem to be the ticket at this time. If you want to get in on some of this awesome Spring time bass fishing at Clear Lake call me, Carl at Clear Lake Bass Guide to plan your trip of a life time. Of course as soon as Spring is over there’s top water season….
