Reaction Bite at Clear Lake

I was out Tuesday and chose to try reaction baits most of the day. The bite was much slower with lures than with the live minnows a couple days earlier. I caught about a dozen bass on the lipless crank baits, A-Rigs, and swim baits. Also caught a couple on jigs. The Lucky Craft LV500 seemed to be my best bet that day. The forecast is calling for some rain this week which is badly need as Clear Lake is very low right now. Hopefully the rain will help the bite as well. We are having our annual New Years Day tournament again next week so if any of you are interested in fishing a fun tourney this is a great way to start the new year. Also it’s time to start planning for the up coming spring fishing season and getting you trip on the books so call as soon as possible to choose the dates that work for you before the calendar fills.

Clear Lake is the Best Lake in the Country

That’s right, Clear Lake is the number one lake in the world right now!!! I have personally caught 8 fish over 10 pounds in the last 3 weeks with the best three weighing in at 11.54(in the Wild West Bass Trail tourney), 12 pounds 2 ounce, and 13 pounds 13 ounce. Also had a client last week catch a 10.2 pounder and 4 more over 8 pounds. These are not fish caught on minnow but lures. The better bass are being caught on lures with the bigger numbers of bass coming on minnows. I have also seen pictures of many many other bass over ten pounds in the last couple weeks. The best baits right now are rip baits, Lucky Craft LV500, A-rig, and swim baits. With the weather that’s coming this week the fish will be hitting the shores and spawning soon so if you are looking to get in on some of this prespawn fishing you better call ASAP!!! If bed fishing is your thing, then call me and let’s get a date set before my calendar fills.

Warmer Weather Means Warmer Water and Hungry Bass

Clear Lake is still coming up and the forecast calls for a warm weekend. This is going to get the fish moving up into th shallow waters and make them want to eat! I’ll be out this week getting ready for the ABA tournament on Sunday. While most people are home getting ready for the super bowl, I’ll be out there trying to win another American Bass tournament. If you are interested in going out this week give me a call, I’ll be fishing the rest of the week. Should be able to catch fish using rip baits such as the Lucky Craft Stacey 90, also swimbaits, jigs, and A-rigs.
The fishing at Lake Berryessa is also starting to pick up. The fish are still deep there but they are feeding up so they’ll be moving up soon. Jigs and Senkos are key lures there along with the A-rig. If you are look for a guide for either of these lake give me a call and let’s go get em.

Winter Time Blues

Well it’s the time of the year that the fishing gets really tough. You may go out and catch only one or two fish, but they will probably be big bass! The best lures right now on Clear Lake are jigs and swimbaits…and of course live minnows. They are eating minnows pretty good so if you the need to catch fish that’s the way to go. At Berryessa the bite is a little better because of the spotted bass population. They can be caught on jigs, worms and spoons in the narrows now. The rains are going to help the water level at both lake and the bite should get better when stable weather returns.

Stable Warm Weather and Rising Water Temperature

Well the days are getting longer and the extra sunshine along with the warm days are helping the water temp to rise slowly. The bass are already in their staging areas and eating pretty good. Last week I caught a 10.2, a 9.13, and a 9.1 pound bass all on jigs. Also caught several 5 to 8 pounders. I also had two guide trips that yielded fish up to 8 pounds plus a few catfish up to 20 pounds. The top lures have been jigs, senkos, and rip baits. Of course the minnow bite is crazy good. I still have a few days open for the spring fishing so if you are interested in some of this awesome fishing it’s time to give me a call!

Back on Track

Well after being down because of a blown lower unit then a blown power head I have changed to a Mercury 250 Pro XS. I got the boat back just in time to fish the WON BASS OPEN here on Clear Lake but with no prefish time I didn’t do very well. Now I’m back to fishing and I have figured out the lake again. I know what I did wrong and what I should have done to win the tournament. Fishing is good and the key lures are jigs, chatter baits, square bill crank baits, and top water lures. So if you are ready to get out and catch some of these big bass give me a call and let’s get your fish on!

Warming Weather Equals Warming Water Equals Big Bed Fish

It looks like summer has arrived at Clear Lake. High temps and calm wind; great weather for bed fishing. Time to break out the Dobyns flipping sticks and bed fishing baits and hit the shores of this beautiful lake. My boat is down for a while, but I have a great friend who is willing to let me use his 21 foot Triton for the next couple of weeks so I won’t miss a beat. Thank You Bob (Crabman) Transano. My lures of choice for bed fishing are Senkos, jigs, trash fish, tubes, and crawfish imitating baits. Some fisherman are against bed fishing but I know that if the bass are caught from a bed and released they will go right back to the bed and do their thing. As long as you take care of them they will spawn again year after year. They will also get smarter each time they are caught so they are harder to catch by the meat hunters that take advantage of bed fish and take them out of the lake for dinner. I’m not against eating bass occasionally but taking them off beds to eat them is killing way to many fish at one time. Well now you know where I stand on the subject of bed fishing, so if you want a chance to catch a really big bass and you are willing to release her to do it again call me and lets book your trip of a life time.

Winter is When the Big Girls Eat!

The bite has been pretty slow on Clear Lake for the past month because of the cold weather and extreme cold water temps. However the bass that are being caught for the most part are big ones. The best bite using lures has been late in the evening and just after dark. Of course the bite on minnows is still good even with the cold water. Those big bass just cant pass up a live minnow sitting in front of their face. We are still catching a few cat fish also most ever trip out that are up 20 pounds. These past few warm days should get the fish excited and start them back to eating better. So if you want to get out and catch that fish of a life time now is the time to call your favorite bass guide (me), and let me put you on that toad you been dreaming about!
