Reaction For Bass Action

If your coming to the Bass Factory you need to be prepared to throw some reaction baits if you want to catch the big bass. The fish at Clear Lake are already feeding up and the better fish are being caught with the LV500, medium to deep crank baits and Alabama Rigs. Good bass are also being caught using jigs and worms and of course live minnows. Today we had around 40 fish up to 7 pounds with most of the Bass hitting around 3-4 pounds. The weather was not on out side as we had high winds and rain so all in all it was a good day. If you are ready for the trip of a life time call/text me and let’s get you in the calendar.

Clear Lake is Up and Down

We had our annual New Years Day Tournament on Friday and it was a tough bite for us of the field. There was a great turn out this year as we had 35 teams competing. My partner and I could only get 4 fish to bite and their weigh was 16.06. We ended up in 6 place with only 4 fish. Another 4 pounder and we would have placed 3rd. But that’s fishing! Our fish were all caught on the A-Rig. The winning team had 24 pounds and caught their bass on a Lucky Craft LV500. Other teams reported catching their fish on jigs, crank baits, and drop shots. Jeff and I went back out yesterday and the bite was completely different. We fished the same areas and caught around 15 fish up to 7 pounds. What a difference a day makes! Anyway we are expecting rain for the next couple days so that should help the bite. The minnow bite is still going strong so if your looking to hit the lake anytime soon be prepared to be flexible. If you’re looking for a guide give me a call and we’ll set up a trip for you.

Reaction Bite at Clear Lake

I was out Tuesday and chose to try reaction baits most of the day. The bite was much slower with lures than with the live minnows a couple days earlier. I caught about a dozen bass on the lipless crank baits, A-Rigs, and swim baits. Also caught a couple on jigs. The Lucky Craft LV500 seemed to be my best bet that day. The forecast is calling for some rain this week which is badly need as Clear Lake is very low right now. Hopefully the rain will help the bite as well. We are having our annual New Years Day tournament again next week so if any of you are interested in fishing a fun tourney this is a great way to start the new year. Also it’s time to start planning for the up coming spring fishing season and getting you trip on the books so call as soon as possible to choose the dates that work for you before the calendar fills.

Full Lakes

The rains this year are doing wonders for NorCal lakes. Lake Berryessa is very likely to reach the Glory Hole this year as it is only 7 feet down now and rising fast. We got 3.5 inches of rain in Lake County last night and a lot of that water goes directly into Lake Berryessa. It has actually come up 2 feet in the last 24 hours and still rising. However the rising water and unstable weather are not helping the fishing. I fished there last weekend and caught fish on a spinner bait, the A-Rig, jigs and drop shot. The better fish were shallow but I caught bass down to 25 feet. The great thing about Berryessa is that there are Smallmouth, Largemouth, Spotted Bass, and Meanmouth Bass there so you can usually find something willing to eat! As far as Clear Lake goes, at this time there is a 5 mile per hour limit on boats because of flooding. That probably would have been lifted today but the rain last night has brought the lake back to 8.6 feet which is nearly at flood stage and she’s still rising. It could be a few weeks before that it lifted now. As soon as it is I will be out there looking for some Clear Lake Giants!!

Massive 16.3 Pound Bass

That’s right, yesterday a behemoth largemouth bass was caught out of Clear Lake that weighed 16.3 pounds! She was the largest bass I’ve heard of in the last few years but I know there are fish that are a lot bigger than her still swimming in Clear Lake and Lake Berryessa. The lake has almost reached the full mark and its still rising slowly so it should be full within the next couple days. Lake Berryessa has also come up some in the last couple days and is looking much better. It is actually about 5 feet down from the highest point last year and still rising so it should at least reach the mark. However it is still 32 feet from full so lots more rain is needed! As far as the fishing goes, I haven’t been on Lake Berryessa since this last rain started but it was good just before the storms rolled in. I was catching fish on top water lures in the main lake, jigs in the narrows and a few bed fish in the creeks. Clear Lake on the other hand is still fishing quite well even with this nasty weather. The water has gotten muddy in all the creeks so finding cleaner water is the key. I’ll be back out tomorrow looking to beat that 16 pounder and getting ready for a couple guide trips later this week. The best baits will be swim baits and glide baits but also jigs in the old tules will be key for the next few weeks. I still have a few days open this week so if you would like a chance at the years biggest bass call me and let’s book your day!

Clear Lake is Filling Up

Clear Lake is currently at 6.35 which is about one foot from the full mark. The bad thing is they are starting to open the dam and let water out in order to prevent flooding. I think it is a little too soon as the lake has only come up about 5 feet all year and flood stage is at 9.5 feet. We are a long way from that mark at this point! Hopefully they won’t dump too much water. As far as the fishing goes, before the rains started the fishing had been really awesome but the water was getting supper clear which makes the fishing tough. The rains not only bring the lake level up but also stain the water so as soon as the rains slow down the fishing should be nothing short of great. Not only is the bass fishing good, so is the crappie fishing. The best way to catch these tasty fish is with small jigs or minnows. For the bass it’s time to start throwing swim baits over the grass flats. They can be caught with anything from Little Creepers Trash Fish to 12 inch Osprey swim baits and River2Sea S-Waver to 14 inch glide baits. While Clear Lake is nearly full and should be above the full mark by the time this rain is over, Lake Berryessa is still severely low. Only a few of the lake’s boat ramps are currently open dew to the low water level there. The fishing there is still good though with a few small mouth and large mouth moving up on their beds just before the rain started. Well if this weather is making you stir crazy, give me a call and let me guide you to some of the years best fishing!

Hawgs(big bass) are Brawling at Clear Lake

I haven’t been out in the last two days but a couple of friends have sent me pictures of their catch and it looks like I missed a couple great days on the water. I saw pictures of a 43 pound 5 bass sack and a 38 pounds sack. Mean while I just got a German short hair pointer so I have been on puppy duty! Tomorrow I’m taking Remington(my pup) to Lake Berryessa to get ready for the 4th Berryessa Bass Trail tournament which is Sunday 2/21. The bite on Clear Lake is still good with Lucky Craft LV500 lipless crank baits, Pointer 128 rip baits, and A-Rig. Also some fish are starting to eat jigs and swimbaits. Next week the weather is going to be awesome again so if you are itching to get on some of the best bass of the year give me a call and let’s do it!

Warmer Weather Means Warmer Water and Hungry Bass

Clear Lake is still coming up and the forecast calls for a warm weekend. This is going to get the fish moving up into th shallow waters and make them want to eat! I’ll be out this week getting ready for the ABA tournament on Sunday. While most people are home getting ready for the super bowl, I’ll be out there trying to win another American Bass tournament. If you are interested in going out this week give me a call, I’ll be fishing the rest of the week. Should be able to catch fish using rip baits such as the Lucky Craft Stacey 90, also swimbaits, jigs, and A-rigs.
The fishing at Lake Berryessa is also starting to pick up. The fish are still deep there but they are feeding up so they’ll be moving up soon. Jigs and Senkos are key lures there along with the A-rig. If you are look for a guide for either of these lake give me a call and let’s go get em.

Rising Water

The latest rains have brought Clear Lake up almost 3 feet from its lowest point. And it looks like we should get another 2+ inches before the end of the week. On top of that the fish are eating pretty good. Almost 26 pounds was needed in the American Bass tournament held here this weekend for the win. There were several bass over 6 pounds caught mostly on jigs in the Henderson area. Also some good fish have been caught on swimbaits, Lucky Craft Vl500s, and spoons. Fishing will be geting better and better as we near spring. It’s time for the big bass to start moving into the staging areas so they will be much eazier to catch. If you are like me and this rain is making you stir crazy, give me a call and let’s go fishing! Also don’t forget the ISE starts Thursday. You can find me at the Dobyns Rod booth on Saturday and Sunday.

Winter Time Blues

Well it’s the time of the year that the fishing gets really tough. You may go out and catch only one or two fish, but they will probably be big bass! The best lures right now on Clear Lake are jigs and swimbaits…and of course live minnows. They are eating minnows pretty good so if you the need to catch fish that’s the way to go. At Berryessa the bite is a little better because of the spotted bass population. They can be caught on jigs, worms and spoons in the narrows now. The rains are going to help the water level at both lake and the bite should get better when stable weather returns.
