Happy New Year

Well 2018 is here and it’s time to get ready for the best bass fishing of the year in Northern California. I have been out of the loop for a couple months due to family emergencies and vacationing. While 2017 was a great year for fishing I’m looking forward to getting the new year under way. I have done some upgrading my Ranger boat and while it’s not the newest on the lake it has new carpet and a fresh detailing plus I have the new Minn Kota Ultrex on the way. I’m ready for the new tournament season to begin and supper excited to put my clients on some giant bass in both Clear Lake and Lake Berryessa. It’s the time of the year when anglers start getting the itch so if your looking for a specific date you should call sooner than later to get on the books before you day is taken.

High North Wind Slow Clear Lake Bite

We have had supper high winds at Clear Lake this week and the bass here don’t like cold north wind! Even with the wind Clear Lake is still better than most. I had clients catch fish up to 9 pounds and I caught a 9.5 pounder. They are still eating rip and jerk baits, Lucky Craft LV500 and other lipless crank baits, Little Creepers Trash Fish and other swim baits including glide baits. Lake Berryessa is also kicking out some giant bass like the 14 pounder caught by a team in the American Bass Ass. tournament Saturday. Back at Clear Lake the water temp is climbing to 65 in the day so the bite will change from prespawn to spawning bass really soon. So if you like looking at bed fish get ready it almost here!

Hawg Heaven

The last couple weeks have been incredible for me! The fishing at Clear Lake has been phenomenal for me and my clients. We have had multiple days with 30 plus pounds of bass and one day with 41.6 pounds. Each day saw more than 20 fish being caught. Not only bass but the crappie are chewing as well. We haven’t seen the huge 3 to 5 pound crappie that Clear Lake is know for but 50 to 100 per day is not uncommon with fish to 2 pounds. As for Lake Berryessa the bass are eat there as well. 18 to 25 pound limits are the norm and I have had several bass over 5 pounds there. Back to Clear Lake, ABA held its 4th tournament of the season here yesterday and my partner and I won with 36.42 pounds backed up with a 10.52 kicker that was caught on a swimbait and the rest were caught on rip baits and lipless crank baits. It looks like the weather is going to change next week so the fishing may change a little but we need the water in both Clear Lake and Lake Berryessa so…bring on the rain!

Clear Lake is Turning On

Well it’s about time…Clear Lake is bringing to put out a few fish. I had two trips last week and both were successful. On Friday my clients manage to catch a dozen bass up to 6 pounds. The better fish were caught on the Lucky Craft LV500. They also caught fish on a BDS3 which is a square bill crank bait.
Well if you’re like me you are getting the itch so give me a call and let’s book your trip.

Big Baits and Bed Fishing

I had a couple of my oldest clients with me last week and they brought along a friend, Jim for his first trip on Clearlake. They all caught lots of fish. The best bass of the day fell to Brad and weighed in at 6.7 pounds. This was his personal best. Jim also caught his personal best that weighed just over 5 pounds. We caught fish on jigs, Senkos, big swimbaits, and the A-rig, however most of the fish fell for live minnows. Now it’s time to get ready for the Chamber tournament where I expect to find big bass eating big swimbaits. I will also be looking for fish on beds as the water is warming up so the fish should be moving up to the shore. So if you are interested in catching your personal best bass and throwing big swimbaits and bed fishing is your thing, give me a call and lets book your trip.
