April Brings Crazy Weather to Clear Lake

While the fishing was incredible in March, April was completely different at Clearlake. The weather has the fish so messed up that they have backed off and are hard to figure out. The bass were ready to move to the bank and start the spawning process but cold front after cold front with high winds dropped the water temp and left the fish confused. Now the forecast is calling for stable, warm weather coming soon so the fish will move up and do their thing next week. If you like looking at big bass and catching them give me a call and let’s get you booked ASAP. As far Lake Berryessa the fishing there is really good right now. The water is clearing up so you can see the fish that are on the beds and they are aggressive. Put a drop shot in front of them and hang on!

Clear Lake will Drop Below Flood Stage Today

Thanks to the lack of rain over the past couple weeks the lake will drop below the flood stage today. Konocti Vista Casino launch ramp is open and I have heard that the ramps at Library Park in Lakeport are open now also. As of yesterday the boat ramps at Redbud Park in Clearlake are still closed but should reopen soon. The fishing is phenomenal right now as the bass are starting their staging process getting ready to spawn. The crappie are also still biting really well. This weekend the Wild West Bass Trail will be at Clear Lake bringing 150 to 200plus teams trying to cash in on a $10,000 pay day for first place. Lake Berryessa is still flowing over the Glory Hole but the fishing is impoving daily. I still have a couple days open in March and April so if you’re looking to catch a giant bass now is the time! Call me and let make it happen!!

Windy Wednesday Night

Wednesday evening was one of the windiest night I have ever seen on Clearlake. The fishing during the day was pretty good as my clients caught around 12 bass up to 5.5 pounds. Still not much of a top water bite even early in the morning but the crank bait bite is still good. They caught fish on lipless crank baits (Luckycraft LV500), deep crank baits and jigs. Most of the fish came from 8 to 15 feet. My wife fished the Wednesdat Nite Shootout with me and she caught a small 2.5 pound bass while I caught a 4.5 pounder that was good enough for second place. Mr. Kevin Hall caught the biggest bass of the night that weighed 4.9 pounds…that’s quiet a bit off of our normal wieght for the WNS. Fall is closing in and the fishing is still awesome now so it’s time to plan that fishing trip when the weather is comfortable and the fishing is at its best!!!

Fall Fishing at Clearlake

It seems that fall is upon us here in Northern California…the days are shorter , the nights are cooler and the bass are eating! This is the time of the year that Clearlake gets hit hard with big tournaments like the Bob’s Marine tourney, ABA TOC, Triton Owners Tourney and the FLW tournament. With all this pressure every year you would think that Clearlake could not continue to produce…but it does! The fishing is awesome right now and only gets better though the next couple months. The bite now is wide open with fish being caught on crank baits (shallow, deep and jigs, lipless), jigs, and some swimbaits. If you are up for some of the country’s best fall fishing give me a call.

Rising Water

After the 5 inches of rain Clearlake has risin about 2.5 feet. That not what we need but it is a great start. It is raining again and the forecast calls for possibly another 2 inches of rain over the next couple days. That could bring the lake up another 6 to 12 inches. As far as the bite, I haven’t fishing Clearlake since the rain and have heard any reports. I did fish Berryessa Saturday and Sunday. We had a Berryessa Bass Tournament there and we took second place with 17.91 pounds. The first place had 18.10 and edges us out by less than a quarter of a pound. We caught fish there on the A rig, Lucky Craft LV, Senko, and the Huddleston swim bait. The biggest fish came on the Hudd and weighed 7.5 pounds.

Rising water

Last week the bass moved up and were starting to make their beds but the weather this week has pushed them back out. This week we caught fish in the staging area again which is much easier  for most clients than bed fishing.  The baits that were most successful were Lucky Craft LV500s, trash fish swim baits, the A-Rig, rip baits, big swim baits, and of course live minnows.  The best news is that the lake has come up about 6 inches already and should rise a little more.  Once the weather stabilizes and it starts to warm up again the bass will be back on the shore and bed fishing will be the way to catch the big girls again.  So if you are looking to hit the shores of Clearlake in search of that giant bass call me and let’s get it done!

Big Baits and Bed Fishing

I had a couple of my oldest clients with me last week and they brought along a friend, Jim for his first trip on Clearlake. They all caught lots of fish. The best bass of the day fell to Brad and weighed in at 6.7 pounds. This was his personal best. Jim also caught his personal best that weighed just over 5 pounds. We caught fish on jigs, Senkos, big swimbaits, and the A-rig, however most of the fish fell for live minnows. Now it’s time to get ready for the Chamber tournament where I expect to find big bass eating big swimbaits. I will also be looking for fish on beds as the water is warming up so the fish should be moving up to the shore. So if you are interested in catching your personal best bass and throwing big swimbaits and bed fishing is your thing, give me a call and lets book your trip.
