Clear Lake is the Best Lake in the Country

That’s right, Clear Lake is the number one lake in the world right now!!! I have personally caught 8 fish over 10 pounds in the last 3 weeks with the best three weighing in at 11.54(in the Wild West Bass Trail tourney), 12 pounds 2 ounce, and 13 pounds 13 ounce. Also had a client last week catch a 10.2 pounder and 4 more over 8 pounds. These are not fish caught on minnow but lures. The better bass are being caught on lures with the bigger numbers of bass coming on minnows. I have also seen pictures of many many other bass over ten pounds in the last couple weeks. The best baits right now are rip baits, Lucky Craft LV500, A-rig, and swim baits. With the weather that’s coming this week the fish will be hitting the shores and spawning soon so if you are looking to get in on some of this prespawn fishing you better call ASAP!!! If bed fishing is your thing, then call me and let’s get a date set before my calendar fills.

Awesome Week on Clear Lake

This has been an incredible week. I have caught a 13 pound 13 ounce bass and a 12.2 pounder plus 3 more over 10 pounds. I’ve had a client, Randy catch a 10.2 pounder and several more over 8 pounds. His goal was to catch his personal best, a bass over 7 pounds…easily surpassed! Catching a 10 pound bass was on his bucket list…Checked that one off!!! Last year Clear Lake was ranked number 3 in the country…well it’s better this year. Has to be number one. What other lake can produce 3 fish over 11 pounds in a tournament and 8 over 10 pounds. Then turn around and have a tourney with 6 more over 10 the following week? I have personally caught 9 fish over 10 pounds this month with 2 of them coming in one tournament. It was the Wild West Bass Trail tournament which I caught a 11.54 pounder that was the second big fish of the tourney. We had 40.19 pounds total that landed us in 2nd place behind a 41.5 pound bag. We still have a few more week of prespawn fishing then it’s time to look at them on beds… Bed fishing!! If you want to get in on some of the best fishing on the best big bass lake in the world give me a call and let’s get you on the calendar.

Bed Fishing 101

If you like bed fishing now is the time to head to Clear Lake or Lake Berryessa. Both lakes are on the verge of exploding with bed fish. This past weekend my partner and I won an Anglers Choice tournament at Lake Berryessa and all our fish were on beds. The wind was blowing really hard but we found some protected water and there were lots of bass still on beds in the area. If you’ve never bed fished before or don’t know how, call me and I’ll put you on some of the best bed fishing of the year.

Lake Berryessa Reapers Tournament

The last few days I have focused on Lake Berryessa preparing for the Reapers tournament. We found bass on the east shore that were eating top water baits really good in practice but the night before tournament day the temperature dropped so our top water bite died completely. We changed gears and caught 19 pounds on drop shots and Senkos. We also found one big fish on a bed but she wasn’t locked up and just wouldn’t eat for us. Now it’s time to focus on Clear Lake again. The weather this week is going to be HOT, so the fishing is going to change here. Time to get out the top water baits, frogs, spooks, poppers, punkers, and wake baits. If that’s your thing give me a call and lets go catch some of these post spawn hogs!

Spawn and Post Spawn

There are still lots of bass on beds here at Clear Lake, but most of the fish spawned over the last couple weeks. The next couple of weeks the focus will be on the post spawn fish. That means throwing Senkos and swim baits around dock and other post spawn areas. This week I had 3 trips that had clients catching 30 to 40 fish a day on beds mostly using Senkos, swimbaits, jigs, and tubes. Yesterday I had a old client and a friend of his and they caught fish using minnows until they used all four dozen in about 3 hours. Then they started bed fishing and caught another 15 or so bass. Well if you want to get in on the last of the bed fishing here give me a call and lets schedule your trip soon or it will be over and I know you don’t want to have to wait until next year to see these big fish setting in their beds….and feel them pulling on your line!

Warming Weather Equals Warming Water Equals Big Bed Fish

It looks like summer has arrived at Clear Lake. High temps and calm wind; great weather for bed fishing. Time to break out the Dobyns flipping sticks and bed fishing baits and hit the shores of this beautiful lake. My boat is down for a while, but I have a great friend who is willing to let me use his 21 foot Triton for the next couple of weeks so I won’t miss a beat. Thank You Bob (Crabman) Transano. My lures of choice for bed fishing are Senkos, jigs, trash fish, tubes, and crawfish imitating baits. Some fisherman are against bed fishing but I know that if the bass are caught from a bed and released they will go right back to the bed and do their thing. As long as you take care of them they will spawn again year after year. They will also get smarter each time they are caught so they are harder to catch by the meat hunters that take advantage of bed fish and take them out of the lake for dinner. I’m not against eating bass occasionally but taking them off beds to eat them is killing way to many fish at one time. Well now you know where I stand on the subject of bed fishing, so if you want a chance to catch a really big bass and you are willing to release her to do it again call me and lets book your trip of a life time.

Rising water

Last week the bass moved up and were starting to make their beds but the weather this week has pushed them back out. This week we caught fish in the staging area again which is much easier  for most clients than bed fishing.  The baits that were most successful were Lucky Craft LV500s, trash fish swim baits, the A-Rig, rip baits, big swim baits, and of course live minnows.  The best news is that the lake has come up about 6 inches already and should rise a little more.  Once the weather stabilizes and it starts to warm up again the bass will be back on the shore and bed fishing will be the way to catch the big girls again.  So if you are looking to hit the shores of Clearlake in search of that giant bass call me and let’s get it done!

Big Baits and Bed Fishing

I had a couple of my oldest clients with me last week and they brought along a friend, Jim for his first trip on Clearlake. They all caught lots of fish. The best bass of the day fell to Brad and weighed in at 6.7 pounds. This was his personal best. Jim also caught his personal best that weighed just over 5 pounds. We caught fish on jigs, Senkos, big swimbaits, and the A-rig, however most of the fish fell for live minnows. Now it’s time to get ready for the Chamber tournament where I expect to find big bass eating big swimbaits. I will also be looking for fish on beds as the water is warming up so the fish should be moving up to the shore. So if you are interested in catching your personal best bass and throwing big swimbaits and bed fishing is your thing, give me a call and lets book your trip.
